JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Newt Gingrich pulled out all his tricks at Thursday night's GOP presidential debate in Jacksonville: attack the moderator, attack Mitt Romney, let other candidates get twisted up in their own words and feed on the energy of the audience. In South Carolina, they propelled him to victory. This time, they weren't enough.
Gingrich, more than any other candidate, has benefited from his debate performances. His fiery, aggressive attacks appealed to hungry conservatives, and he frequently tells audiences he is the only candidate who could win a debate against President Obama. On Thursday, he didn't do that, and his campaign notably played down the debate's importance afterward.
CNN host and debate moderator Wolf Blitzer stole a chance for Gingrich to get a big head start. Blitzer allowed a member of the audience to ask a question about immigration and gave Rick Santorum, whose momentum from the Iowa caucuses has largely disappeared, the first chance to answer.
In South Carolina, Gingrich received one of his biggest boosts when he went after CNN's John King, the debate moderator. King led the questioning by asking Gingrich about claims that he once asked his wife for an "open marriage." Gingrich responded by attacking King and the news media, earning a standing ovation from the audience.
Gingrich's other South Carolina boost came in an earlier debate, when he went after moderator Juan Williams for questioning his statement that President Obama was a "food stamp president."
Blitzer, however, was ready on Thursday. He reminded Gingrich that he earlier said he was satisfied with the level of transparency from Romney on his taxes, but has since attacked the former Massachusetts governor for living in "worlds of Swiss bank accounts and Cayman Island accounts."
"Wolf, you and I have a great relationship -- goes back a long way," said Gingrich, adding, "This is a nonsense question. Look, how about if the four of us agree for the rest of the evening, we're going to talk about issues?"
When Blitzer replied that he was simply asking about a comment he made during a TV interview, Gingrich shot back, "I'm perfectly happy to say that in a TV interview. This is a national debate."
While there was some booing of Blitzer, the biggest applause came for Romney, who took Blitzer's side: "Wouldn't it be nice if people didn't make accusations somewhere else that they weren't willing to defend?"
Gingrich even received some boos, for his claim that he balanced the budget.
Former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.), who recently endorsed Romney, admitted that Gingrich wasn't able to deliver the punches he did in South Carolina.
"I think it's more of a question of the opportunities that were presented," said Thompson. "If someone gives you an opportunity to bear down on them, you do it. But you can't fake something like that and get away with it."
Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond downplayed the importance of the debates to the Florida primary.
"I think the dynamic's completely changed," Hammond said, referring to the difference between South Carolina and Florida. "I think if you look at the outside super PAC activity, I wouldn't want those ads up against me. That's pretty bad. They're reinforcing what everyone fears about Mitt Romney -- he's inconsistent, he will change, he will lie to you. The truth is sometimes an unfamiliar fact to him."
Attacks on Romney weren't easy on Thursday either, as he continued his aggressive stance of recent days.
Romney's backers were noticeably upbeat talking with reporters after the forum, saying they thought it was perhaps his best debate.
Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom said Gingrich looked "deflated" on Thursday night and called him "erratic" and "unhinged." Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty said Romney "kicked butt."
"I think Newt lost his mojo a little tonight. He just didn't seem to have the get-up-and-go that he had in previous debates," Pawlenty said.
When asked whether this was Romney's strongest debate, Pawlenty replied, "I think he had an incredibly strong debate. He's had a lot of great debates throughout this campaign. I think this was the strongest of the series."
During the debate, Gingrich stood by a claim in one of his ads that Romney is the most "anti-immigrant" GOP candidate.
"Mr. Speaker, I'm not anti-immigrant," Romney indignantly replied. "My father was born in Mexico. My wife's father was born in Wales. They came to this country. The idea that I'm anti-immigrant is repulsive. Don't use a term like that."
He reminded the audience that Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) recently denounced Gingrich's ad that called Romney "anti-immigrant."
"And I'm glad that Marco Rubio called you out on it," Romney said. "I'm glad you withdrew it. I think you should apologize for it, and I think you should recognize that having differences of opinions on issues does not justify labeling people with highly charged epithets."
Romney's performance was far from flawless. He had his own slip-up on this topic later, when he was asked about his ad saying that Gingrich once said Spanish was "the language of the ghetto."
"I doubt that's my ad, but we'll take a look and find out," replied Romney. "There are a bunch of ads out there that are being organized by other people."
It actually is Romney's ad, as Blitzer later noted. In fact, at the end of the ad, Romney says in Spanish, "I'm Mitt Romney. I'm running for president, and I approve this message."
When asked whether Romney actually does approve his campaign ads, Fehrnstrom chalked the moment up to memory loss due to the large volume of ads.
"We've had, I think about 85 campaign videos and TV ads and radio ads that have been up and running in different states. He doesn't recall all of them. That particular ad is a radio ad. It was rated, by the way, by Politifact, as 'mostly true,'" Fehrnstrom said.
The debate capped a week of increasingly harsh attacks on Gingrich from some conservative establishment figures. Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay said Gingrich is "erratic, undisciplined." Former Sen. Bob Dole called him "a one-man band who rarely took advice."

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Auto dealers say California's proposed rules to require carmakers to build more electric and other less-polluting hybrid cars and trucks by 2025 will cost consumers more money and will stifle the industry's growth.
Consumer groups say customers might pay more for the vehicles but will save in lower fuel and other costs.
Both sides submitted testimony Thursday during a meeting of the state's air quality board, which was poised to vote on rules to require that vehicles emit about 75 percent less smog-producing pollutants.
The new standards, which also include big cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, would begin with new cars sold in 2015, and get increasingly more stringent until 2025. The rules also mandate that one of every seven new cars sold in 2025 in the state be a zero-emission or plug-in hybrid vehicle.
California Air Resources Board Chairman Mary Nichols said she hopes the rules lead "the nation and the world."
"We can't afford to wait. We have to act on these issues now," she said at the panel's meeting. "Our projections show continued growth in population and vehicle miles traveled, which will affect air quality for years to come."
Other states often adopt California's smog emissions standards because they are stricter than federal ones.
Fourteen states, including Washington, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts, have adopted the state's current emissions goals, which is why the new regulations could have a wide-ranging effect. Of those states, 10 also adopted the zero-emission vehicle standards.
But the California New Car Dealers Association and other industry groups representing those who sell cars said the board is overestimating consumer demand for electric vehicles and other so-called "zero-emission vehicles."
Some dealer groups have estimated that $3,200 would be added to the average cost of a car because of the required technological changes, and that consumers have been slow to adopt them.
Jonathan Morrison, of the state dealers' association, said car retailers are supportive of new technologies that are accepted by their customers, but said the acceptance of electric and other vehicles has been slow.
"Consumers do not make purchasing decisions based upon regulatory mandates," he said.
The board's research staff disputes those estimates and says increases in hybrid and other sales continue to rise as more cars hit the market. They argue that fuel cost savings will make up for any vehicle price increase.
"Our research shows a $1,400 to $1,900 car price increase. But over the life of the vehicles, the owners save $6,000 in reduced fuel and maintenance costs," board spokesman David Clegern said.
One of the nation's foremost consumer groups, the Consumers' Union, the policy and advocacy division of Consumer Reports, supports the regulations.
The rules will "protect consumers by encouraging the development of cleaner, more efficient cars that save families money, help reduce the American economy's vulnerability to oil price shocks and reduce harmful air pollution," according to a letter from the group.
Automakers including Ford Motor Corp., Chrysler Group LLC, General Motors Co., Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. and others said they generally supported the regulations in short statements delivered during the hearing.
The overall goal of the state is to have 1.4 million zero-emission and plug-in hybrids on California roads by 2025. But the program also looks ahead to 2050, laying groundwork for a goal of having 87 percent of the state's fleet of new vehicles fueled by electricity, hydrogen fuel cells or other clean technologies.
Yet the rules do provide some flexibility for automakers by giving them the ability to claim credits toward the state's zero-emission mandates if the company's other models exceed the federal greenhouse gas emissions mandates. The credits could be applied toward those zero-emission vehicle mandates starting in 2018 through 2021.
However, this aspect of the plan was not supported by many of the U.S. car makers, who said it could take hundreds of thousands of electric and other clean vehicles off the road in that time period, hurting the emerging market.
"This greenhouse gas over-compliance provision runs counter to the goals of the zero-emission vehicle mandates," said Robert Babick, speaking on behalf of GM. "We don't see how this provision makes the program better."
The board is scheduled to resume hearing testimony on Friday morning in Los Angeles.

The odds of a major depressive episode are more than double for those working 11 or more hours a day compared to those working seven to eight hours a day, according to a report is published in the Jan. 25 issue of the online journal PLoS ONE.
The authors, led by Marianna Virtanen of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health and University College London, followed about 2000 middle aged British civil servants and found a robust association between overtime work and depression. This correlation was not affected when the analysis was adjusted for various possible confounders, including socio-demographics, lifestyle, and work-related factors.
There have been a number of previous studies on the subject, with varying results, but the researchers emphasize that it is hard to compare results across these studies because the cut-off for "overtime" work has not been standardized.
"Although occasionally working overtime may have benefits for the individual and society, it is important to recognize that working excessive hours is also associated with an increased risk of major depression", says Dr Virtanen.

When you tap the screen, Viggle's software for iPhones and iPads listens to what's on, recognizes what you're watching and gives you credit at roughly two points per minute. It even works for shows you've saved on a digital video recorder.
Rack up 7,500 points, and you'll be rewarded with a $5 gift card from retailers such as Burger King, Starbucks, Apple's iTunes, Best Buy and CVS, which you can redeem directly from your device.
With some back-of-the-napkin math, you can figure that it would take three weeks of watching TV every night for three hours to earn enough for a latte at Starbucks.
But the company plans to offer bonus points for checking into certain shows such as "American Idol" and 1,500 points for signing up. You can also get extra points for watching an ad on your device. The beta version awarded 100 points for watching a 15-second ad from Verizon Wireless.
"Viggle is the first loyalty program for TV," said Chris Stephenson, president of the company behind Viggle, Function (X) Inc. "We're basically allowing people to get rewards for doing something they're doing already and that they love to do."
The idea behind Viggle is that by giving people an added reason to watch TV, the size of the audience will increase, thereby allowing makers of shows to earn more money from advertisers. Advertisers such as Burger King, Pepsi and Gatorade have also agreed to pay to have point-hungry users watch their ads on a mobile device.
In exchange, users earn points, which Viggle converts into real value by buying gift cards at a slight discount from retailers.
If the company gets the point-count economy right, it can end up making more money from advertisers and networks than it gives away in rewards.
The app will also give the company valuable insight into who is watching what, as redeeming rewards requires putting in your age, gender, email address and ZIP code.
"It really shows what social TV is going to evolve into," said Michael Gartenberg, a technology analyst at research firm Gartner. "For folks behind the scenes, this is a great way of seeing who really is watching."
The company hopes that user activity will grow by word of mouth, especially by offering a 200-point bonus to people who successfully get their friends to try out the service.
The app makes its debut in Apple Inc.'s app store on Wednesday. Versions for Android devices and computers are in the works.
The company has put in some safeguards. You must watch a show at least 10 minutes to earn bonus points. And you can't watch the same ad over and over again to earn more points; there's a one-ad-view-per-person rule.
Function (X) is owned and led by entertainment entrepreneur Robert F.X. Sillerman, who once owned a big stake in "American Idol" owner CKx Inc. That gives the company deep and broad connections in the entertainment business.
Function (X) has brought in $100 million in investment capital, and its stock trades on the Pink Sheets, a platform that allows people to buy shares but doesn't require the company release its financial results. Function (X) currently has a market value of about $1 billion.

Humans are complicated genetic jigsaw puzzles. Hundreds of genes are involved in determining something as basic as height.
But man's best friend is a different story. New research shows that almost every physical trait in dogs ? from a dachshund's stumpy legs to a shar-pei's wrinkles ? is controlled by just a few genes.
Writer Evan Ratliff has been looking into dog genetics for National Geographic Magazine. He tells weekends on All Things Considered host Guy Raz that that quirk makes it extremely easy for breeders to develop new, custom-designed dogs ? like the German hunters who bred the original dachshunds a few hundred years ago.
"These German hunters wanted some sort of dog to hunt badgers and other sort of small rodents that live in holes." So they crossed long, low basset hounds with tenacious terriers, to produce a dog that could chase badgers into their dens and then be yanked out again by the tail if necessary. The breeders also built in loose fur, so any bites wouldn't do much damage.
Other breeds, like the shar-pei, developed after breeders pursued a particularly favored look, Ratliff says.
For years, scientists thought that dogs were just as genetically complicated as humans, Ratliff says. But that turned out not to be the case. Scientists at Cornell, UCLA, Stanford and the National Institutes of Health have been comparing dog DNA as part of a project called CanMap.
"They took a whole large collection of dogs, 900 dogs from, I think, 80 breeds," Ratliff says. "And what they learned was that in these dogs, if you look at their physical traits, everything from their body size to their coat color to whether they have floppy ears, it's determined by a very small number of genes."
It's actually human interference that's the cause of what Ratliff calls "Tinker-Toy genetics" in dogs. "The way that natural selection works, it usually works on very small changes," he says. Sudden large changes can actually be harmful.
But breeders can introduce large changes in a dog relatively rapidly, by selecting the genes that have the strongest effects.
"If I want a tall dog, a large dog, then I end up selecting for this gene called IGF1, which has a very very strong effect on the size of a dog. And when you do that over a couple of hundred years, what happens is ... it becomes the gene that controls body size."
No word yet on which genes control loyalty, dog breath, or a propensity to slobber on your slippers.

COMMENTARY | Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich's decisive win over Mitt Romney in South Carolina was largely based on his debater performance, according to exit polls conducted by CBS News. South Carolina voters who identified themselves as Protestant/Other Christian make up the majority of voters at 80 percent. Gingrich received 42 percent of those votes and 37 percent of the votes of people who Identify themselves as Catholic. Rick Santorum, who is Roman Catholic, received 15 percent of the Catholic vote. Despite the large number of people who identify themselves as Evangelical in South Carolina, when asked how much it matters to them that a candidate shares their religious beliefs only 26 percent responded that it matters a great deal.
South Carolina voters felt Newt Gingrich is more likely to defeat Barack Obama than any of the other candidates. Primary voters were also asked "Which ONE of these candidate qualities mattered most in deciding how you voted today? (CHECK ONLY ONE)." Of the four choices given, an overwhelming 45 percent chose "Can defeat Barack Obama." Of those voters, 51 percent felt New Gingrich was the best choice. Mitt Romney was a distant second choice with 37 percent.
Rasmussen Reports shows Gingrich leading Romney 41 percent to 32 percent in Florida as the Florida primary approaches. A Rasmussen national poll shows Gingrich with 35 percent to Romney's 28 percent. President Obama will have to deal with his record as he faces his Republican challenger in the general election. If that candidate is Gingrich, he will have already weathered much of the storm about his past. President Obama will begin going on the offense with his third State of the Union Address. He will not doubt point to recent improvements in the economy. The Daily Presidential Tracking Poll has Obama's approval rating at 22 percent and disapproval at 38 percent. Despite how poor that may sound for his Democratic supporters, the same poll shows him ahead of both Gingrich and Romney if the election were held today. Obama gains 46 percent of likely voters and Romney 43 percet. With Gingrich as the Republican candidate the current results are President Obama 49 percent and Gingrich 40 percent.
The Republican voters of South Carolina have spoken and the results were not what anyone was predicting in the weeks leading up to the primary. Mitt Romney was already preparing his acceptance speech of the parties nomination when he was forced to concede defeat in both the Iowa Caucus and the South Carolina Primary.
Leading in the polls by 10 points now is no guarantee of winning the general election. President Obama still has a difficult task ahead -- running against both the Republican candidate and his own record as president.

In Florida, the powers-that-be previously passed a law requiring venues that receive public funds to discharge an important public duty:? provide shelter to the homeless when the buildings are otherwise not in use.
To date, the three NFL stadiums located in Florida, along with numerous other facilities, have failed to comply.? Now, a pair of Republican legislators hope to force the stadiums to comply ? or to refund the public money previously received.
?These organizations have failed to follow the law for over 20 years,? Representative Frank Artiles (R-Miami) said in a statement, via the Tampa Bay Times.? ?This is the simply the State of Florida holding them accountable.?
Per the Palm Beach Post, Senator Mike Bennett claims that none of the 17 facilities that have received public assistance have complied with the law.? This includes Tampa?s Raymond James Stadium, Jacksonville?s EverBank Field, and Miami?s SunLife Stadium.
Under a measure introduced by Bennett, counties and/or franchises that have received state money would have to prove the existence of a homeless shelter for use on non-event evenings or refund the money.
According to the Times, SunLife Stadium has received $37 million, Everbank Field has received $35.1 million, and Raymond James Stadium has received $30 million.
It?s a great move.? Florida has subsidized pro sports franchises with a clear expectation that the pro sports franchises will help the homeless.? The pro sports franchises have pocketed the money while ignoring their obligations.
Here?s hoping that Stephen Ross, the Glazers, and Shad Khan will make this right without having to be forced to do so.

More people survive melanoma now than in generations past, but the death rate of one type of melanoma has not budged for the past 30 years, a new study shows.
Nodular melanoma consistently accounts for 14 percent of diagnosed melanomas, but makes up 37 percent of ultimately fatal cases, according to the study published in the January issue of the Archives of Dermatology.
Part of the reason that nodular melanoma contributes to a disproportionate number of melanoma deaths may be that it doesn't always look like the cancerous moles described in public health campaigns.
"You can have melanomas that don't follow the rules, said Dr. Martin A. Weinstock, co-author of the paper and professor of dermatologyat Brown University. "These nodular melanomas tend to be more dangerous than the other melanomas."
"If you're just relying on the [typical signs of melanoma], there's the risk that if you get a nodular melanoma, then you won't notice it," Weinstock said.
A more deadly melanoma
The researchers pored through more than 111,000 cases of invasive melanoma reported between 1978 and 2007 in the widely used database called the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results Program, and found that at least one in five cases of nodular melanoma is ultimately fatal.
Both nodular melanomas and the more typical "spreading" melanomas begin in skin cells called melanocytes, which produce the skin pigment melanin. When most melanomas develop, they stay in the skin's top layer, growing no deeper than one-tenth of a millimeter, for months or years. These cancers are easier to spot as their diameter increases, and it usually takes only a little novocaine and a quick mole removal to cure it.?
But in nodular melanoma, the cancer cells quickly start growing vertically: A bump forms at the skin's surface, and they send roots down into the fat, blood and other tissue of the body. This matters, because a cancer's depth can determine the chances of survival.
"One of the most important aspects of prognosis is how deep the melanoma is when it's found," said Dr. Roy Grekin, professor of dermatology and director of the dermatologic surgery division at the University of California San Francisco.
Grekin said if a cancerous mole grows 3.5 or 4 millimeters deep into the skin before it's found, then only 60 percent of these patients will survive in the next five years.
Once the cancer grows deep enough, the subtype of melanoma has no bearing on the chance of survival, Weinstock said, so he suggests the public pay more attention to catching nodular melanoma in earlier stages.
What to look for
Dermatologists have long promoted looking for the "ABCD" characteristics of moles: asymmetry, borders (look for irregular edges), color (look for changes, or a mixture of colors) and diameter (a dangerous spot is usually 6 millimeters wide, or about the size of a pencil eraser).
"In general, we've done such a good job of educating the public about melanoma, but it only covers the superficial type," said Dr. David J. Leffell, professor of dermatology and surgery at the Yale School of Medicine.
Finding nodular melanoma requires adding more letters to the ABCD model, such as "E" for evolving, or rapidly changing over weeks or months. Doctors also added "F" and "G" to describe nodular melanoma's tendency to show up as firm, and growing rapidly.
"If you're just relying on the ABCDs, there's the risk that if you get a nodular melanoma, then you won't notice it," Weinstock said.
"The most common kind of melanoma starts as a dark brown or black patch and it increases in size -- there's often some pink in it," said Dr. Ali Hendi, member of the American Academy of Dermatology and assistant professor of dermatology at Georgetown University Hospital. "Nodular melanoma is different: it can be any color from pink, to a purple, to a dark brown color. But it's often pink."
"The common denominator is that they're changing, they're increasing in size, they're getting wider, they're getting deeper," Hendi said.
Weinstock and his colleagues admitted there were some limitations to the study; first, that not every doctor reports the subtype of a melanoma case in the SEER registry, and his team had no way to check the reports.
But nodular melanoma grows so aggressively that it can be difficult for any person to catch the cancerous lesions. Leffell said he has had patients leave a doctor's office with no suspicious moles, only to return two months later with nodular melanoma.
"Do the ABCDs, but also trust yourself, because in my experience patients are the first ones to notice something is wrong," Leffell said. "If patients are worried about a spot and the doctor doesn't want to biopsy it, find another doctor to biopsy it. The patient is the customer."
Pass it on: Some melanomas don't grow in diameter, they grow in depth instead, and can be more deadly.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Saturday that he personally held peace talks recently with the insurgent faction Hizb-i-Islami, appearing to assert his own role in a U.S.-led bid for negotiations to end the country's decade-long war.
Karzai made the announcement hours before he met with American special representative Marc Grossman to discuss progress and plans for bringing the Taliban insurgency into formal talks for the first time.
"Recently, we met with a delegation from Hizb-i-Islami ... and had negotiations," Karzai told a meeting of the Afghan parliament. "We are hopeful that these negotiations for peace continue and we will have good results," he added.
Karzai's statement was a reminder that any negotiations to end Afghanistan's war will be more complex than just talking to the Taliban's Pakistan-based leadership, headed by Mullah Mohammed Omar. The two other main insurgent factions in the country have their own leaders and agendas.
Hizb-i-Islami is a radical Islamist militia that controls territory in Afghanistan's northeast and launches attacks against U.S. forces from Pakistan. Its leader, powerful warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, is a former U.S. ally now listed as a terrorist by Washington.
Based over the Pakistan border, Hekmatyar has ties to al-Qaida and has launched deadly attacks on U.S. troops in Afghanistan. Fighters loyal to Hekmatyar also have strongholds in Baghlan, Kunduz and Kunar provinces in the north and northeast Afghanistan.
The other main insurgent group is the feared Haqqani network, which maintains close ties to both al-Qaida and the Taliban and commands the loyalties of an estimated 10,000 fighters. The Haqqanis have been blamed for a series of spectacular attacks, including suicide bombings inside Kabul.
By showing he can bring at least one major faction to the negotiating table, Karzai may hope to boost his standing in a tentative peace process that has recently been dominated by Washington. The president has met before with representatives of Hekmatyar, whose political allies hold seats in the Afghan parliament and Cabinet, but Saturday's public announcement seemed intended to bolster Karzai's insistence on inclusion in the U.S.-led peace process.
"It should be mentioned that the Afghan nation is the owner of the peace process and negotiations," Karzai said. "No foreign country or organization can prevent (Afghans) from exercising this right."
The U.S. has repeatedly said that formal negotiations must be Afghan-led, but Karzai is reportedly uneasy with his government not being directly involved in recent preliminary talks with Taliban representatives.
U.S. representative Grossman began meeting with Karzai on Saturday, the U.S. Embassy said.
Grossman, however, stressed that any future negotiations would include Afghanistan's government.
"After our meeting with President Karzai, we will decide what to do next because we take his guidance and advice in an Afghan-owned and Afghan-led process," Grossman said Friday during a stop in India.
French Defense Minister Gerard Longuet also arrived in Kabul on Saturday for talks with Afghan officials after Paris suspended training missions following the killing of four French troops by an Afghan soldier, the latest in a rising number of assaults in which Afghan security forces or infiltrators have turned their guns on coalition forces.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has threatened to withdraw French troops from Afghanistan early over the deaths, a potential setback for the U.S.-led coalition's efforts to build a national army and allow foreign troops to go home.
After a briefing with an Afghan general, Longuet said in footage broadcast on France's LCI TV that the killer was a 21-year-old former soldier "who deserted, who went to Pakistan, who re-engaged in the Afghan army."
Earlier in the day, the French defense minister said his mission in Kabul is to "evaluate the attitude our officials should take" in the future.
On Saturday, insurgents killed a NATO service member in southern Afghanistan, the coalition said. The statement gave no other details, nor the nationality of the casualty.
Insurgents clashed Saturday with government forces in the town of Barmal in Paktika province in eastern Afghanistan, said Maj. Abdul Rahman, who coordinates coalition and Afghan operations in the area.
The Paktika governor's office said four attackers were trying to enter the town's main bazaar and then move toward government offices and military bases nearby. Before they could, Afghan security forces engaged them in a one-hour gun battle and all four attackers were killed, it said.
Separately, a roadside bomb killed four Afghan civilians Saturday morning in Helmand province in the south, the Interior Ministry said.

If 2011 wasn't the year that solid-state drives (SSDs) went mainstream, it was a year they delivered newly groundbreaking performance. First came the incredibly fast 240GB OCZ Vertex 3, which was followed by its slightly less impressive 120GB version. Those looking for a lower-capacity SSD had at least one outstanding choice, the 128GB Samsung SSD 830 Series. But when Samsung's drives hit higher capacities, how well do they stand up against OCZ's? Pretty well, at least with regards to the 256GB version ($429.99 list)?though it doesn't come out on top in every situation.
Even so, it has all the features you have a right to expect from a top SSD contender at the beginning of 2012, starting with 6Gbps SATA III. (Samsung's 2010 debut consumer model, the SSD 470 Series, only used 3Gbps SATA II.) More impressively, this 2.5-inch-form-factor drive (which measures only 7mm in height?on the short side for an SSD) is Samsung all the way down, from its stylish and shiny black brushed-metal frame to its three-core controller to the DRAM to the 20nm MLC toggle DDR NAND flash memory itself. Samsung even claims that the drive's wear-leveling and garbage collection technologies are proprietary (though traditional TRIM is supported). You can expect to get about 238GB of usable space from the drive (the remaining gigabytes are dedicated to overprovisioning), and it's covered by a three-year warranty. Other nice inclusions are discs containing the full version of Norton Ghost and Samsung's SSD Magician software for performing tasks like optimizing performance (via garbage collection) and updating the drive's firmware and, as of early January 2012, a free download code for Batman: Arkham City.
Performance was robust as well, with the Samsung drive constantly trading top scores and times with the 240GB Vertex 3. What drive came out ahead and on which task depended on the particular application. On our AS SSD benchmark, OCZ's drive generally did better with reads and Samsung's with writes, and we witnessed something similar on the ATTO Disk Benchmark?up to a point. From 0.5KB to 2KB, OCZ owned the reads and the Samsung writes; at 4KB the two flipped and continued alternating wins straight down the line through 512KB. With results upwards of 546MBps in 128KB, 256KB, and 512KB sequential reads, the Samsung drive even surpassed its own stated performance rating of 520MBps?an impressive feat. (For the record, the Samsung drive also promises up to 400MBps sequential write speeds, and routinely performed above that rating, too.)
It was after that, however, that the Samsung's limitations began to show. The OCZ took the rest of the rest of the ATTO tests?both write and read?up to 8MB, all of the CrystalDiskMark tests except Sequential and 4KB QD32 reads, and all of the PCMark 7 storage trials. The biggest discrepancy we noticed was on CrystalDiskMark's 4KB QD32 Write test: The OCZ delivered a result of 252MBps, whereas the Samsung drive could only muster up 147.4MBps. Combined with the ATTO results, this shows that, when you're more intensively moving larger amounts of data, the 256GB Samsung drive can't quite keep up with the competition.
Based on what we observed, the Samsung SSD 830 Series isn't quite able to wrest our Editors' Choice title away from the 240GB OCZ Vertex 3 (which is also priced at $399.99 list, $30 less than the Samsung)?but in more standard everyday applications it's essentially a neck-and-neck race. Our standard position in situations like this is that, all else being equal, when you're paying this much money for this (relatively) little storage space, you want the fastest speeds possible, and you get those with the OCZ drive. Nevertheless, Samsung's drive is an attractive, consistent performer ideal for slightly lower-level applications, and its larger amount of storage space and free software may help cushion the blow of the marginally slower transfer rates that just keep the SSD 830 Series from taking the top prize.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Facing record-low approval ratings from Americans weary of congressional gridlock and elections in November, lawmakers want to show voters that really, they do get along after all.
Scores of Republican and Democratic lawmakers plan to cross the aisle and mingle with their opponents during President Barack Obama's State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress next Tuesday, officials said on Thursday.
Skeptics say recent history suggests that the display of collegiality by nearly 140 of the 535 lawmakers during the nationally televised prime-time speech will be little more than that - a display.
Analysts point to the oddity of Republicans and Democrats trying to show voters bipartisanship during an election year, when both parties are expected to campaign aggressively, and negatively, to win control of both chambers.
And then of course there is Congress' recent track record on bipartisanship.
Dozens of Republicans and Democrats sat next to each during the last State of the Union, in a fleeting display of unity after Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords was gravely wounded in a shooting.
"What followed was one of the nastiest and least productive years in the entire history of Congress," said Larry Sabato, a political analyst at the University of Virginia, predicting more of the same this year.
"It's always better to be civil than not, but we now have irrefutable proof of what this little technique actually accomplishes: Nothing," he said.
Until last year, there was a strict, although unofficial, tradition of lawmakers seating themselves by political party in the House chamber to hear the president's speech - an annual event that has become a competition to see which side can out-perform the other with either applause for the president's remarks or stony silence.
But in the months after Democrats and Republicans broke the mold and mingled during Obama's 2011 State of the Union, both parties fought bitterly in a long-running battle over taxes and spending. The fighting brought the U.S. government to the brink of shutdown three times and a near default.
WINDOW DRESSING?
As a gridlocked Congress struggles to pass even basic legislation, public confidence in the House of Representatives and Senate has plunged to record lows.
The call for bipartisan seating as a move toward comity was first made last year by Democratic Senator Mark Udall and Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski after the Giffords shooting. The two senators are again helping lead the charge for a bipartisan display at next week's speech.
The idea also was embraced by several groups, including Third Way, a centrist think tank, and No Labels, a public advocacy group, and even more lawmakers are planning to participate this year.
No Labels, which is compiling a list of lawmakers intending to join in the bipartisan show next week, said there are 136 such members and the number is expected to grow as Obama's speech nears.
"By no stretch do Senator Udall and I believe this gesture will put an immediate halt to the argument culture rampant on Capitol Hill, but it is a step in the right direction when it comes to opening up the lines of communications," Murkowski said of this year's State of the Union plans.
Paul Sracic, a political science professor at Youngstown State University, said lawmakers must do more than sit together.
"This is just window-dressing," Sracic said. "It is a cost- free way to appear bipartisan, without actually having to vote in a way that might actually cause difficulty in your district."

SEATTLE (AP) ? Tens of thousands of Pacific Northwest residents faced the prospect of a chilly weekend after a powerful storm brought snow and ice and left a tangle of fallen trees and damaged power lines. Several Oregon counties saw their worst flooding in more than a decade.
The National Weather Service forecast more rain and winds gusting as high as 40 mph Saturday in Western Washington, a combination that could bring down even more snow-laden and ice-damaged trees.
Nearly 230,000 customers were without power late Friday night in Western Washington, about 220,000 of them Puget Sound Energy customers.
The utility has brought in repair crews from across the West and planned to field more than 800 linemen on Saturday, in addition to tree-trimming crews, spokesman Roger Thompson said.
"The wind is a wild card that could set us back," he said, adding PSE hoped to have the majority of the outages restored by Sunday, although some customers will probably be without power into early next week.
The Weather Service predicted weekend lows in the mid-30s.
Several warming shelters have been opened in the area to aid people whose homes are without heat.
Despite warnings from emergency officials, the first cases of possible carbon monoxide poisoning surfaced Friday night. Two families in the Seattle suburb of Kent were taken to hospitals after suffering separate cases of possible poisoning. Both had been using charcoal barbecues indoors for heat.
The storm was already blamed for three deaths. A mother and her 1-year-old son died after torrential rain on Wednesday swept away a car from an Albany, Ore., grocery store parking lot. An elderly man was fatally injured Thursday by a falling tree as he was backing an all-terrain vehicle out of a backyard shed near Seattle.
On Washington's Mount Rainier, a blizzard kept rescuers from searching Friday for two campers and two climbers missing since early this week. Just east of that region, about 200 skiers and workers were able to leave the Crystal Mountain ski resort after transportation officials reopened the area's main highway, closed two days earlier by fallen trees.
Near Tacoma, three people escaped unharmed Friday when a heavy snow and ice load on the roof of an Allied Ice plant caused the building to collapse. West Pierce Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Hallie McCurdy said they heard loud noises and got out just in time.
As floodwaters receded, residents of Oregon's Willamette Valley began taking stock of damage in soaked cities.
Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber paid a visit Friday to the hard-hit town of Turner, where 100 homes were damaged or still underwater.
Friday's mainly dry streets belied a morning of terror barely 24 hours earlier, when emergency crews conducted 55 boat rescues as water filled streets, homes and businesses.
"You just watch the water rise hour by hour, and there's nothing you can do about it," Mayor Paul Thomas said. "It's a long, slower sort of torture."
Kitzhaber said the state would work with local and federal officials to try and get disaster funding to Turner and other communities hard-hit by flooding.
The governor praised residents' strong sense of community as neighbors helped each other.
Nancy Ko saw that spirit first-hand. From the safety of higher ground, she watched a live feed from a security camera as water rose over the curb and lapped against the front door of the convenience store and cafe she owns just feet from Mill Creek.
Out of the blue, five strangers showed up and plopped sandbags in front of the door, preventing damage that she believes would have otherwise been far more severe.
"Just a godsend," said Ko, a Korean immigrant who has owned the store for six years. "Good person, amazing persons."
Elsewhere in the Willamette Valley, a 35-year-old woman who drove a Ford Mustang into 4 feet of floodwater was plucked from the roof Friday by deputies who arrived by boat to save her. It was one of a number of dramatic rescues in western Oregon, left sodden by as much as 10 inches of rain in a day and a half that has brought region's worst flooding in 15 years.
Interstate 5, the main road connecting Seattle and Portland, was briefly closed near Centralia so crews could remove fallen power lines.
Much of Washington's capital, Olympia, was without power.
Gov. Chris Gregoire's office, legislative buildings and other state agencies in Olympia lost electricity for several hours before power was restored. The governor thanked repair crews late Friday by hand-delivering peanut butter cookies.
The storm was "a constant reminder of who's in charge. Mother Nature is in charge, she gives us a wake-up call every once in a while, this is one of those," Gregoire said.
It was still snowing in the Cascades, with up to 2 feet possible in the mountains over the weekend.
At Sea-Tac Airport in Seattle, airlines were trying to accommodate passengers whose flights were canceled Thursday. The airport's largest carrier, Alaska Airlines, canceled 50 of its 120 daily departures Friday. On Thursday, Alaska and sister airline Horizon canceled 310 flights to and from Seattle, affecting 29,000 passengers.
In Seattle, Carly Nelson was negotiating an icy sidewalk on her way to Starbucks. Nelson has been frequenting her neighborhood coffee shop to avoid cabin fever.
"I'm pretty tired of it. It gets old pretty fast. All my friends are stranded in little pockets and you can't get together to go to yoga," she said. "I'm just looking forward to being able to go wherever I want to go."
