22 Beinecke Scholars are selected annually on the basis of superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement (3.7+ GPA), and personal promise. This award provides $32,000 towards graduate funding. Undergraduate students who plan to earn a terminal degree (PhD or MFA) in the arts, humanities, or social sciences should apply in their junior year. Candidates must also have a documented history of receiving need-based financial aid. OSU may forward one nominee for this award.

Temporary employment such as an internship, practicum, and alternative work-study or cooperative education may be authorized under certain circumstances as curricular practical training (CPT). Such training must not only be related to your major field of study but must also be an integral part of your established curriculum still in progress. CPT is a benefit of being an F-1 Student. CPT is an application process and is subject to evaluation. This workshop will help you understand the eligibility and application procedures.

Optional Practical Training (OPT) Workshop
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is intended to provide hands-on practical work experience that is directly related to a student's major area of study. The training is authorized by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for a maximum of 12 months. It is available to students who have been lawfully enrolled on a full-time basis for at least one academic year (9 months). OPT is a benefit of being an F-1 Student. Funded by the U.S. Department of State, the Pickering Foreign Affairs Undergraduate Fellowship seeks to increase diversity of the workforce within the Foreign Service. The Fellowship provides financial support for the senior year of college and first year of graduate study to prepare students to enter the Foreign Service. To be eligible, applicants must be juniors with a GPA of 3.2 or higher, have demonstrated leadership abilities, be planning a career in the U.S. Foreign Service, and show how they will bring a diverse perspective to the group.

Fellowships for Undergraduate STEM Students Information Session
These fellowships are available to undergraduate students of junior or senior standing in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) field who have successfully completed two years of East Asian language study at the college level. Summer 2012 fellowships are expected to cover $5,000 in tuition and also provide a $2,500 stipend. Academic Year 2012-2013 fellowships are expected to contribute $10,000 towards tuition and also provide a $5,000 stipend. Subject to approval, FLAS fellowships may also be used for foreign language and area studies at other U.S. or foreign institutions.

This short-term study abroad program travels to Ireland at the end of June 2012.? Students will take English 595 during spring quarter 2012; the course explores images of Ireland and conceptions of Irish identity in a range of expressive forms?folklore, song, short stories, novels, poetry, drama, and film.?? On June 22 students will travel with Prof. Ray Cashman to Ireland and spend nine days in Dublin, Galway, and the Aran Islands, visiting sites in associated with the literature, history, culture, and concept of Irish identity. This six week summer program at the University of Greenwich in the UK is open to all majors, with priority given to junior and senior English majors and minors. Participants will take a ?Literature of London: Renaissance to the Present? course taught by University of Greenwich faculty, and an Independent Studies course supervised by Professor Jennifer Higginbotham of Ohio State. Oxford University Pre-Law Program
This four-week summer program at the University of Oxford in the UK is open to all majors and allows participants to study a variety of subjects in the British tradition of lectures and tutorials. Courses are taught by members of the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies at Wolfson College, University of Oxford, and a senior professor of The Ohio State University Michael E. Moritz College of Law. Integrated into the program are numerous special field visits to places of legal, historical and cultural interest, such as London and Stratford-upon-Avon. Dr. Karima Korayem, Department of Economics, Alazhar University in Egypt
Dr. Korayem worked as a consultant to several international, regional, and national organizations, including the World Food Programme of Poverty (WFP), a number of United Nations programs such as the Economic Commission for Africa and the Department for Economic and Social Affairs, UNICEF, the World Bank, the Arab Organization for Human Rights (AOHR), the League of Arab States, the Minister of Finance (Egypt), and the National Bank of Egypt. She has also contributed to more than 60 international and national publications on development issues such as poverty, income distribution, globalization, and economic policies.

West Africa Culture, Society and History
This program is an extension of the course Ghana: West African Culture, Society & History to be offered by the Department of African American and African Studies during Spring Quarter 2012. In June, students will travel to Ghana for four weeks to visit and study sites of social, cultural, and historical importance. They will come away with an awareness of global interconnections, the past and present transatlantic ties that bind their own American world to the African one. They will see the significance of Ghana as a Mecca of Pan-Africanism, the political and ideological movement of continental Africans and African-descended peoples (or the African diaspora) in the Americas and Europe. They will also see contemporary Ghana as a developing nation undergoing an economic revolution, and on the threshold of a ?take-off,? and arguably the most vibrant example of democratic governance on the African continent. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers approximately 1,900 opportunities for students to study, research, or teach abroad while promoting cross-cultural interaction and mutual understanding. Candidates looking to study or conduct research abroad will need to develop an independent program proposal and secure an in-country affiliation. During the summer of 2012, students will be able to travel to Toledo, Spain to participate in a seven-week program at the Fundaci?n Jos? Ortega y Gasset. Courses in anthropology and archaeology, art history, history, interdisciplinary studies, Spanish linguistics, Spanish and Latin American literature, philosophy, political science and Spanish language will be offered. A list of the courses offered at the Fundaci?n Jos? Ortega y Gasset and their equivalencies at Ohio State is included in the supplemental Toledo Program application packet. South Africa: History, Culture and Society
The South Africa Study Program is an extension of an interdisciplinary course (AFAM&AST 485.01, Southern Africa: Society and Culture) to be offered by the Department of African American and African Studies during Spring Quarter 2012. In this class, students will be introduced to the predominant cultural, social, and historical themes of the region. In June 2012, students will travel to South Africa to visit and study sites of cultural and historical importance. The sites are selected for their role in the history and politics of their time, and reflect the general social context of South African life. Development in Indonesia
This program will focus on development in Indonesia and consists of two parts: a spring quarter course at Ohio State followed by a four week study portion in Indonesia. The Ohio State course will cover three main topics. The first will be an overview of Indonesia with a survey of contemporary politics, economics, culture, society, and modern history. There follows an introduction to the social science debate about the causes and consequences of different approaches to development in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The third part will focus on the Indonesian version of the development debate. While abroad, the group will explore the Indonesian case in depth utilizing resources at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta. Students will directly observe development projects while out on field trips in the region. During the last week abroad, students will present and defend papers summarizing and evaluating what they have learned about development in Indonesia and its implications for the broader social science debate. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers approximately 1,900 opportunities for students to study, research, or teach abroad while promoting cross-cultural interaction and mutual understanding. Candidates looking to study or conduct research abroad will need to develop an independent program proposal and secure an in-country affiliation. Grants will fund project and living expenses for an 8-12 month period. OSU will forward all students completing the application process. The Columbus Museum of Art, home to diverse works of art, will open its doors to Ohio State students and allow the community to explore the collection. This event will be completely free for all OSU students, faculty, staff, and their families. Food and entertainment will be provided.
